Shanghai University (SHU) Library was established in 1994. Its mission is to support and augment learning, teaching, and research by providing an environment conducive to studying, by delivering efficient, effective services, by providing an excellent collection, and by actively encouraging and facilitating use of the collection and services.
Currently, Shanghai university library system includes the main library, two branch libraries in Yanchang and Jiading campuses. The main Library building, finished in June 2000, is centrally located on the picturesque main campus of the University. It is an eight-storey building with 38,000 square meters of floor space providing over 1,800 reading seats.
To support its mission, the Library offers a rich array of information resources, both local and remote in science, engineering, business and management, the humanities and social sciences. The Library offers more than 3 million print items and around 2,600 print serials titles . The Library also maintains an expanding number of electronic databases including CNKI, CHAOXING, Web of knowledge, ELSEVIER, SPINGER, JOHNWILEY, EI and etc. Electronic collections, both in Chinese and foreign languages, consist of more than 20,000 full-text e-journals and over 1.5 million e-books by 2012.
The library has three book circulation departments and opens 98 hours per week. It provides services to 4,000 person-times on daily basis. Apart from the regular services, the library also provides: Interlibrary loan, Document Delivery, Reference Service, Patron Training and Literature Information. The library has approximately 200 staff and faculty. The departments include: Collection development centre, Reader service centre, System & information centre and Administrative Office.
The Library uses ALEPH for cataloging and circulation management and MetaLib+SFX, an e-resources integration system. With a strong focus on technology and network access, the Library buildings contain various facilities and equipments for digital applications, enhanced information retrieval, and wireless network connectivity.
As a key municipal academic university, the Library is an authorized institute for Library Science Master Degree.
The Library's participation in academic library consortia and international cooperative programs enhances information access and opens borrowing privileges to library collections at other academic and research universities. Among other library organizations and collaborative programs, the Library is a member of IFLA, CALIS, CASHL, SHELIB and SIRN.
As a member of the academic libraries in the world, Shanghai university library is undergoing transformation from a traditional library based on physical collections preservation and service, to a hybrid library, with abundant digital resources, and a rapid developing network service, and faces many challenges. In the 21st century, Shanghai University Library is striving to be a digitized, open and modern academic library, in line with the university's progress towards becoming a state-of-the-art university.
